On account of its size, proximity to the main road, extant encircling wall and prominent château in its midst, Clos de Vougeot is one of Burgundy's most visible Grands Crus. Its considerable extent does mean that its wines are far from homogenous in style and quality, however, Domaine Hudelot-Noellat owns one of the choicest parcels, in the highest part of the slope, just south of the château, next to Domaine Leroy's vines. In fact, the estate deliberately sold off its holdings on the lower slope, reducing production by 40%, but significantly improving the quality of the wine. This is now consistently one of the very finest Clos de Vougeot wines: full-bodied and complex, yet with marvellous finesse.
